Santa Cruz welcomes Rooney return
Wayne Rooney's return to the England squad in time for the latter stages of the FIFA World Cup is good news for football and the tournament, Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz told reporters on Thursday. Paraguay play England on Saturday in the first Group B match. "This is very good for football and it is important for the team to have him back," said Santa Cruz, himself still uncertain to start against England with tendinitis. "In a World Cup there should be all the best players in the world and he is one of them. If he came on against us it would only be good for football," he said. While Rooney is not expected to play any part in the Group B matches against Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago and Sweden, he could be fit for the latter stages of the tournament should England qualify. The 20-year-old, widely regarded as key to England's hopes, broke his foot on 29 April in a Premier League match between his club Manchester United and champions Chelsea. He returned to England's training base at Baden Baden late on Wednesday after flying out earlier in the day to undergo a scan on his injured foot. "In a national team the players are all friends and it is not so much about Rooney as a player as it is about Rooney as a person," Santa Cruz said.
